USING ICE STORM DAMAGE AS A RESOURCE TO IMPROVE SOIL MOISTURE AND FERTILITY

1 PM, SATURDAY, MAY 24

Between Hurricane Helene and two winter ice storms, we have a surplus of downed hardwood logs and branches well beyond our need for winter firewood. If you are in this situation yourself, the Broadened Horizons Teaching Farm is conducting a repeat of last weekend’s workshop 1 PM, THIS SATURDAY, MAY 24, demonstrating the use of downed “woody debris” as a form of rainwater retention by using it to construct hillside berms in high runoff areas.

This holistic earth-based practice also reduces the available fuel load in case of a fire by storing moisture in the wood-based structures. These berms significantly slow down and often prevent the loss of tree leaves and small twigs and branches from washing downhill. Overtime, these decaying structures will become terraced soil, adding to the fertility of downhill ground.

Last weekend’s participants found this workshop to be both practical and emotionally supportive!

THIS IS A 1 HOUR WORKSHOP
