Broadened Horizons Teaching Farm

Categories: , .

Broadened Horizons Teaching Farm is a small, family operated farm in Floyd County, Virginia. We are dedicated to the learning, practice, and teaching of sustainable ecological, agricultural practices. Our teaching farm is…

  • a model of energy and resource efficient structures, well balanced and sustainable land management, and a cooperative relationship with all living organisms.
  • a living outdoor laboratory and classroom for the natural restoration of native soil fertility, slow release water retention, and the reforestation effort to create a diverse woodland canopy on a formerly abused and degraded livestock farm. Our pastures are managed as carefully as our gardens.
  • our grass-fed dairy cows, human intervention-free honey bee colony and free-range chickens are raised using holistic and sensitive good husbandry practices. It is a cooperative relationship and provides all of us a more healthy, functioning ecosystem to live in as a partners.

Climate change is upending the traditional methods of sustainable agriculture. The Broadened Horizons Teaching Farm has been taking a proactive approach to meeting these numerous challenges through an ongoing hands on process that explores different methodologies for combating the extremes of weather events. Droughts, floods, high wind events, and erratic swings in temperatures all negatively affect crop yield and animal health. The BHTF has over 40 years experience in successfully mitigating climate change impacts with low cost, time tested, natural solutions. Farm tours, educational hands on workshop sessions, and a work to learn program allow the public to tap into a comprehensive experiential knowledge of what works and what doesn’t.

Walk-in hours are Wed. Sat. Sun. from 1 to 5 April through October. Other times by appointment.
